The Blue Umbrella (2007)

1h 30mins| Comedy, Drama, Family | 10th August 2007

Binya, a bright 11-year-old girl in a happy Indian country village, sings and plays with her friends as she always does, while a selfish and grumpy old man has an argument with a neighbour as he always does. Binya comes across a blue Japanese umbrella that fascinates her so much that she exchanges it for her grandmother's priceless necklace, which is said to bring good luck. The film, which is based on Ruskin Bond's novel of the same name, combines extremely colourful and gaudy images with Bollywood-style song and dance to emphasise the old lesson that materialist desires lead to punishment.
